Mastiff

Mastiff

This multifaceted portrait of the Mastiff is hand-carved by sculptor Vladimir Nazarov from one solid piece of teak wood. While maintaining the timber’s natural curvature, Nazarov worked with the teak’s existing lines to create this swiveling portrait of a canine that has become a modern emblem of loyalty, gentleness and fidelity. The Tibetan Red Mastiff having recently become a status symbol in China, deemed a luxury object or ‘counterfeit God’ by the media, the work is rife with veritable associations concerning idolatry, property and the metaphysical.
